Apple trees.?

I was wondering if its possible to plant a gala apple seed. would it grow with ontario weather conditions or would it grow inside my house. Please explain if it would work.Thanx

Apple seeds need to be exposed to acid to weaken the seed coat. In nature, this is done by the seed passing through the stomach acids of an animal that eats it, and out in a pile of poop…er…fertilizer. It’s a process called acid scarification – you can do it with sulphuric or phosphoric acids at the approprate concentration (which I don’t know).

Your apple seed may also need a cold treatment (called stratification) to make it think it’s gone through a winter and that the “spring” simulated by ending the cold treatment is the ideal time for it to germinate. It may even need multiple cold/warm treatments.

And then we have to factor in that your gala apple seed would not produce a gala apple if you got it to germinate. The fleshy edible part of the gala apple fruit will come genetically true – it is entirely the product of the Gala apple tree. However the seed contains genetic information from both the gala apple tree and whichever other apple tree fertilized that apple flower, meaning that the characteristics of the tree that develops from the seed cannot be predicted.

So, with effort, you could germinate it, but there’s not much point. Sorry.
