apple trees scotland
when is the proper time to prune apples trees (central scotland)?

there are two times in the year you can prune apple trees in the year
there is winter pruning and this is done when the tree is dormant, this can be done end of november onward. The new leaders formed in the summer can be pruned back by a third. Also any old or branches that cross over other branches can be removed.
Now the summer pruning, this is the pruning to form new fruiting spurs.
The spurs are where to fruit grow.each year in july this is done.above the fruit buds each year there will be new growth and this is where to prune.Above the spur there is a cluster of leaves called the basal cluster, leave two or three pair of leaves above the basal cluster and prune, next year there should be a new fruiting spur formed and some new growth formed and in july each year the same pruning takes place.
a small warning this pruning is for spur fruiting trees however there are a few varieties that form fruit an the tip of the branches called tip bearing trees and must not be pruned. To see pictures of pruning trees the Royal Horticultural Soc.manual of pruning is a good reference and should be available in your local library.
