What kind of tree’s or shrubs can I plant in North Texas, I have a yard that could use some TLC?

I want to fix up my back yard and plant some nice bush’s or shrubs. This is a house that we lived in when I was young. about 10 years ago there were som great big bushes along the fence and when we got hit with a very hot summer they dried up and died. I want to do that again but do not know what kind of bushes they were. Also my mom planted a peach tree and an apple tree but they are still small what other fruits tree’s can I plant?
