How many watts does a pre-lit artificial Christmas tree use?
We brought a Sterling’s Forest pre-lit Xmas tree from USA to New Zealand earlier this year. As the voltage in NZ is 240 instead of 110, we need to buy a step-down transformer for it.
However, I can’t see anywhere on the tree instructions what wattage the tree uses (important, as up to 100 watts transformers are reasonably priced here, but over that they get very expensive!) .
Is it just a matter of multiplying the number of bulbs by the wattage of each bulb?
In the US, a strand of 100 mini lights typically consumes 0.3 amps.
watts = volts x amps or 110 x .3 = 33 watts per strand.
In the US, there is a tag near the male end of the plug that will give the amp rating. If there is a tag on your tree, look for the amp rating.
your watts would be 240 V x ?? amps.
but to answer your question: Yes, it would be a matter of multiplying the wattage of each bulb by the number of bulbs. Give yourself about a 20% fudge factor to keep from overheating your transformer (meaning, if you have 80 watts, you will be fine with a 100 watt transformer).
