crimson queen japanese maple tree is some what dead, need help?

so spring arives and my parents japanese maple (around 1′ 5″) is dead on the higher stem so my parents got a new one and i got that one in a pot because i want to use it for bonsai. can i cut off the top of this tree or do i need to wait? the tree was dug up and put into a pot yesterday but im keeping the pot in the same location it was dug up to cause less stress on the tree. also any information about crimson queen japanese maples would be apriciated i also live in utah if that matters
