Walk Under the Cherry Blossoms of Qingdao

The city of Qingdao – known in the West as Tsingtao – in the Chinese province of Shandong is very much famous for its Zhongshan Park.  This park comes alive in April and May because of its cherry trees that bloom at this time of year. About 20,000 cherry trees are planted in Qingdao’s Zhongshan Park. In fact, the city boasts of having the most cherry trees outside Japan. The Qingdao Zhongshan Park not only prides itself of its popular cherry trees but other attractions as well. It has a botanical garden, a small lake, a zoo, and a Buddhist temple.

Many locals and tourists alike flock to this popular park in Qingdao during the Cherry Blossom Festival. While it can be said that there are several cherry blossom festivals in China, Qingdao’s Cherry Blossom Festival is considered by many as the prettiest. Visitors can marvel at the pink, fluffy blossoms of the cherry trees during the festival, when they are in full bloom. There are a lot of things that visitors can do when they come to the festival. Families and friends can go and have a picnic at the park, sit under the pink shade, or walk along the Oriental Cherry Road – sometimes called the Cherry Blossom Corridor – and admire the blossoms of the cherry trees lined on both sides of the road.

Entertainment during the festival includes exhibits, shows, open-air concerts, and even a beauty contest. Food stalls, a restaurant, and zoo rides add to the park’s unique attraction.

While Qingdao is mainly an industrial, seaport, and naval base center, it doesn’t restrict its visitors to such setting. Business travelers visiting the city when the cherry trees are in full bloom can take advantage of the festivities and mix business with pleasure. They can take some time off and explore Zhongshan Park.

A large number of commercial establishments, historical attractions, museums, beaches, and monuments can also be found in and around the city. Accommodation providers are scattered in the area as well so travelers won’t have a hard time looking for a place to stay while in Qingdao.
