Why is Larch called Juniper in Nova Sotia?
There are lots of anecdotal examples around, but how/why is Larch (Tamarack) sometimes referred to as a Juniper? Larch is deciduous, Juniper is coniferous. Although in some areas Juniper can grow into a large tree, it is mostly a shrub, especially in eastern Canada, Tamarack Larch is used in shipbuilding, and construction where water resistance is important. I have also seen a fine example of Tamarack flooring!
I have Googled (and Yahooed) “juniper larch” and find sites where those words appear one after the other, however none of those pages explain why the word Juniper would be used to mean Larch (or Tamarack). These are definitely two different types of tree, and so my question.
Larch are deciduous conifers.
There are several articles listed in Yahoo under” juniper larch”, which relate the 2.
