What plant would be best for a shrub hedge in temperate climate?

I live in a very temperate area of oregon (Mid-Willamette valley). We get lots of rain and clouds for about 9 months with lows of about 20 in the coldest month(s) but high 90s in July and August. I’d love to go with a native plant if possible. I’m hoping to get something that will be happy trimmed about 2 feet high and 18-24 inches deep as a hedge (60 feet or so). Leafy like english boxwood would be nice, I’m just not sure that’s the right plant. This will go along the edge of a 42″ high retaining wall that will have clematis or something like it hanging down the wall next to sidewalk.

Thanks!
Also, these will be along the southern edge of our property and will be in full sun (at least when its not cloudy-which is a lot of the year). I’m liking the suggestions so far, thanks guys!

Ilex – Inkberry Shamrock – slow growing to 4′ at maturity so you could probably trim it regularly. It can also handle shade and moisture.
