Planting Hedges, Flowers and Shrubs

If you want to enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of your garden, you need privacy from outside intrusion and peeps from strangers or neighbours. On the other hand, you may not want to see what your neighbours are doing in their gardens. To maintain that privacy, you need to place a proper fence around your garden. If I say, hedge is better in place of a fence, it won’t be wrong. Hedge of beautiful flowers and shrubs looks more enchanting and blends well with the overall look of the garden.

You can plant formal or informal hedges, depending on your liking. Informal hedging is choice of many people because it can have plants of either one kind or many kinds. It can be up to 8 ft in height. And you don’t have to spend too much time on its maintenance. These hedges can offer fruits and flowers. Also, these hedges bring beautiful seasonal colours and have interesting shapes.

If you want to plant hedge, take time to decide its type and size – the height and length required to surround your property. You also need to think of maintenance your hedge will need. This will help you either to buy proper tools or decide to use help of professional gardener. Whenever you plant a hedge, make sure that it gets proper light and good air circulation. Plants should be set straight and in a straight line. For planting, you need to dig a hole as deep as the root system of the shrubs you are using for hedging. Now, prepare the soil and in order to avoid weeds, lay a layer of special plastic material. Then, set the plants in the plastic.

There are some good shrubs with beautiful flowers. Arborvitae is a columnar evergreen shrub which grows up to 60 ft tall. It needs moist and rich soil and slight shade to bright sunlight. This shrub grows slow and has bright to dark green and yellow green leaves. In winters, it turns into unattractive yellow green colour.

A deciduous plant – rose – grows up to a height of 15 ft. It grows in average to rich soil and is well drained. Initially it needs sun and shade in the afternoon. Rose is the most popular and most adorable flowering plant in the world. This is one of the best choices for informal hedges. These shrubs are tougher and grow quite easily.

Another evergreen and deciduous flowering plant is Barberry which grows up to 9 ft. It needs average soil and sunlight to grow. It can be a good plant for hedging as it has spiny shrubs. It grows small yellow flowers, either in cluster or single. And also produces black, red or purple berries.

There are many other flowering shrubs which can be planted as the hedges. The choice is always up to you. If you have any doubts, it is advisable to do some research on planting. Either you can buy a gardener’s guide or simply ask a professional gardener for help and advice. Remember, the results will be worth all your efforts.
