Do I need to remove the roots when pulling a shrub?
Hey folks,
I have large overgrown rhododendrons and evergreen bushes (like 6 ft wide) that I’m planning on removing. I will be replacing them with new shrubs.
Question…When I remove the old, do I need to work hard to remove the roots? Or could I just get it down to the stub, and axe it so that the stub is an inch or two below ground? I’d cover it up with some dirt, and plant the new shrubs along side the old. I’d prefer to do that if it was ok and save my back in the process.
This is in MA if it matters. Oh, and the new shrubs will be similar styles (rhody’s, azaleas, boxwood, evergreen…).
Thanks!
Thanks! What about the evergreens though?
I know they’re not coming back…I think I was more concerned about them affecting the new shrubs somehow.
When you replant, you will want to consider what you’ll be digging in. That large of a bush will have spawned a pretty large root system that will need to be dug through. You might reconsider pulling out the current bushes with a come-a-long or wench (we used a truck at one job site and tied a tow rope to the base of the plant) and replant where the old bush was. The ground will get pretty torn up where the old plant came out which will make an ideal planting spot for the new plant.
Water the plants well overnight before you start ripping them out. They’ll come out easier.
Best of luck
