The Versatility Of English Lavender Plants

Majority of plant hobbyists and gardeners attest to the fact that English lavender plant as a very sweet smelling plant variety that can make any garden lovely. Scientifically, English lavender plants are termed as Lavandula angustifolia. It is normally called lavender based on the rich purple color of the flowers. English lavender plants belong to the mint family and classified as an evergreen shrub. Having said that, lavender is much respected as an herb than as a perennial shrub that produces woody-stems. In fact, many people appreciate the English lavender as an aromatic herb which can be used for cooking or simply as an oil extract that can relieve headaches. As compared to French lavender (which is another specie of lavender), the English lavender is more sturdy and can be cold-resistant. For this reason, French lavender is only found in regions that have humid climates like Africa and the Mediterranean. The English lavender has certain special characteristics. First, this plant can reach between 2 to 3 feet in height. The English lavender also has a unique color which is lilac blue in comparison with the pale color of some lavender varieties. Likewise, the leaves are narrow and grayish green in color but some variation can still happen because these plants are known to cross-pollinate easily.

The English lavender is popular since it provides many benefits. First, an oil extract of lavender can be used for aromatherapy which can really be soothing. Basically,lavender is known for promoting a restful sleep which is why lavender soaps and powder are sold commercially. In some occasions, the English lavender can be used to flavor some dishes. Many homes have air dried English lavender scents because they hang dried flowers in some parts of the house that are well-ventilated. As a result, the scent ventilates around the house creating a very calming ambiance.  
 
If you are interested in propagating lavender, remember that they only grow on alkaline and sandy soil with much sunlight. These plants does not need much watering which makes it very useful in rock gardens. If you put it in a garden with marigolds, they perfectly complement the bright flowers creating a beautiful garden. This is the reason why English lavender is a favorite among plant growers.
