What kind of tree should be planted as a memorial?

I wanted to give our neighbor (whose husband passed away five months ago) a tree to plant in memorial of him. I was thinking of maybe something that bloomed around the February, March, or April time period, or maybe an evergreen after reading an earlier question regarding the significance of an evergreen tree. I did like the idea of decorating the grown tree for Christmas. The husband and wife are originally from ElSalvador, and that’s where he both died and is buried. We live in Maryland, so we definitely get winter with significant snowfall here, so I would need something that is not tropical. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

The Eastern Red Bud. The way the tree is uliminated by purple bud is an eye catcher and I think would symbolize there is life after death (winter and spring) Very rich looking tree and one of the first to blossom in the spring.
