Is there a way to get trees to grow faster?

I live in Melbourne, Australia and we are just coming out of summer. I have had to take out a few trees and planted some new ones.

I have a cherry tree, canadian maple and 2 x native trees. I have put some native plant food around those ones but I can’t see how it will get the shrubs to grow, I presume it only feeds them to keep them healthy.

Is there a product I can use to speed up the growth of the new trees that I planted. Some of them will be screening out my neighbours.

Is it too late to still get good growth coming into Autumn?
Thanks Francis – I have mulched all the trees well and have the round plastic waterwell walls around them so I can fill these with water and it all goes directly to the roots. I am also using a product called Miracle Grow but I don’t know if it works or not.

I don’t recommend using Miracle Grow on trees. Reasons are, because you shouldn’t fertilize trees…period. Trees already do a great job at creating their own food, and energy so there is no need to ever apply fertilizer unless the tree is in such a bad state of condition that no other remedy will do.

I see you are mulching and keeping waterwell walls around them, this is good. Try pruning them. If they are 5 years old or older, definitely consider this option. If you maple of cherry tree is at a fairly young age then you can try pruning back TO ONE TERMINAL LEADER on both. Pick a leader which you believe is the strongest, and most dominate and prune the others around it to force it to become the main one. It will shoot off the next growing season very well (most likely) and you will see a difference. Also just doing a very light pruning on the branches as well will help. Wait a period of 2-3 years and see how they react. They key is to prune, and prune them right. And since its Autumn, this is the best time to be pruning them.

As for your native trees…don’t know. I would need to know what species they are.
