Is there a Florida tree that is fast growing yet hurricane safe?
I need to replace diseased trees with one that is fast growing, for shade, but is safe during hurricane winds.
Palm trees give little to no shade and crape myrtles don’t get very big here in central Florida. I’m looking for something to block the afternoon sun from heating up my backyard, lanai and house. I had 3 pine trees there, and they blocked the afternoon sun, but they were diseased and had to be removed.
It depends on where you live in Florida. In the southern sections palms fare pretty well in a hurricane, but in the central and northern parts, many types of palms do not do well. Believe it or not, crepe myrtle trees stand up very well during a storm and are beautiful. Blooming all summer long. I have lived in Florida all my life and have experimented with different types of trees and have found crepe myrtle to be one of the best.
