Looking for fast growing trees that do well in rocky, clay soil (in the midwest)?
I am looking for some trees, I don’t really need/want shade trees, I’d prefer flowering/fruit trees that don’t get overwhelmingly large, and here is my problem.
The ground is very, VERY rocky and the soil is a yellow clay. The rocks keep the soil fairly well drained, and there are older trees around (variety unknown to me though) so I know things can grow here, I just need help finding trees that will do well.
Some of the trees will be planted on the side of a hill, so deep roots and tree stability are important. We just have a large empty area due to poor planning and construction and I want to plant some trees there.
Any advice/help? Thanks!
I also live in the Midwest in an area with rocky clay soil. Although I don’t know about all trees I can tell you what has worked for me and what I have seen in other yards. Well the Maple tree is a very fast growing tree. It has no flowers but has those little helicopter seeds that come off it. We planted and Oak tree in our yard and it grew super fast. Once again no flowers but a beautiful shade tree. One flowering tree we planted that did very well was a Redbud. They are kind of short, stocky trees but get pretty purple flowers in the spring time. Another flowering tree I have seen in my area that seems to do well is the Dogwood. Again it flowers in the spring. A lot of people plant Bradford Pears around here but I have found they are disease prone. One more of my favorite trees is the Mimosa. In the summer it gets those beautiful pink feathery flowers on them. Those grow wild in my area so I know they would do well in rocky clay soil. And lastly is the Weeping Willow. Again, no flowers, but a pretty tree all the same. Just make sure you keep it away from water lines because the roots can damage them.
