Should an orchid tree lose leaves in the spring?

I am in the Phoenix, AZ area and have some kind of orchid tree in the backyard. It has smaller, purplish flowers. Looks closest to variegated orchid tree in pictures but its blooming activity doesn’t match the descriptions I find on the internet.

Mine only blooms in March-April, and every year when the buds start to form it starts to lose almost all its leaves. They grow back in May-June after the blooms fall off.

I have never heard of trees losing leaves in the spring. Is this normal or is there something wrong with the plant and/or its care?

Orchid Tree, scientific name Bauhinia, are known as briefly deciduous. They do exactly as you described; lose their leaves, bloom on the bare branches, and then leaf out new leaves. Most likely in their native haunts they are bare for a longer time due to dry, rather than to cold, weather in the wintertime.
