Tree Identification-Please Help?

There is a tree that I can’t find out the species, it’s in Michigan & doesn’t look native. The wood is reddish and the branches are grouped, they are all around at one height then some space where there are none, then another group of branches. And so on. And it bulges out between every branch. It’s winter so I’m not sure what what the leaves are. It has ‘flowers’ left on it and dad says they are ‘catkins’. I will draw a picture if possible.
