What kind of tree is this?
We just moved into this house in eastern north dakota about a month ago and noticed this tree in our neighbors lawn hangs over our fence and drops a ton of these fruit like things in our yard. We have two dogs and I want to make sure its safe for our dogs to be around them.

THANKS!
Juglans nigra, other wise known as black walnut, would be my first guess at it. check inside the fallen fruit (otherwise called a husk) and see it there’s a walnut in there.
