Why does one branch on my Meyer lemon tree have no flowers or fruit?

My Meyer lemon tree is thriving–all but one branch, which has not borne any fruit. The tree is two years old, and in a container on my back deck in northern California (Sonoma County). The branch that’s not blooming or bearing fruit is very large. Pruning it off the tree would ruin the look of the tree. Any suggestions on whether and how I can get the branch to bloom would be appreciated.

As the other part of your lemon is blooming heavily, most of its energy is currently going there, as fruit production is energy intensive. You don’t say whether this non-fruting brach had any flowers or not, as flowers that didn’t set fruit could be another problem.

I’d leave your plant a couple of years and see if this trend continues, as this may be a temporary problem, that will even out, once this seasons fruits are harvested.

You could potentially prune some of this branch back, which will force new fresh growth, and you may well find that this newer growth will then continue on to flower and fruit- this would save you from having to take a major branch out, and spoil the look of your plant.
