Help me identify a tree growing in Minnesota (Twin Cities area)?
Beginning this time of year (early June), a certain mysterious tree starts to bloom around the Twin Cities, sending out a smell I just love. It’s not really a sweet or floral smell, it’s more “woody” and haunting. It’s most noticeable around the East Metro (Maplewood and Woodbury), in Arden Hills, and is also extremely strong near downtown St. Paul.
I have a guess about what kind of tree is responsible, but I’m not sure what it really is or if it’s even what causes the smell. It is medium-sized, has a “gnarled” look to it with a trunk that splits into many parts, and very dark (possibly black) bark. It is extremely easy to spot this time of year because it turns a very nice shade of whitish-green, which makes it stand out against the other trees around it. These trees seem to be planted near the freeway (35E and 35W) in areas where I smell the scent I described.
I thought these were Lindens, but now I’m not sure. I’d like to buy one someday, so I’d like to solve this mystery.
What do the blooms look like….what color are they? What are the shape of the leaves? I’ve tried looking it up……without actually being there…….I’m leaning towards Lindens as well.
