What Kind of Tree is this ?
My neighbor has a very large tree in his yard – its about the size of a 100-year old maple – it drops these green, lime-sized (and colored) stone fruits at this time of year, that seem to smell vaguely citrusy. Any idea what they might be ?
(Notes – I’m in new england, and I’m not even sure that the part of the tree that drops the fruits wasn’t grafted on at some point in the past 100 years . . .)
Ceebrad – I think you’ve nailed it . . . I will check out the leaves to see if that’s a match. The squirrels do love them, and keep burying them in the planters on my deck.
It’s definitely NOT a chestnut . . . we had one of those in my back yard as a kid, and the fruits of this tree aren’t spiky.
Sounds like a black walnut to me. Juglans nigra. The outer husk is soapy smelling, green and very hard. The squirrels collect these quickly.
