Low-maintenance plants for shade that is really wet in spring, really dry in summer, and slow to drain?
I have a sunken back yard with an area that is largely clay (I’m working on improving it with compost, peat moss, mulch, etc.). That area is like a very shallow pond/bog during the spring thaw but becomes bone dry in summer without supplementary watering (which I try to avoid) because of mature maples. I’m wondering what sort of shade/partial shade plants can survive both wet feet and drought. There’s a lot of advice out there for plants that love it wet or can survive it dry, but not much about plants adapted to both extremes.
I’m in mid-Michigan, zone 5. Any natives (perennials or small shrubs) that people can recommend for shade/partial shade with lots of root competition. I don’t want to just plant some invasive groundcover there (I already spent a huge amount of time and energy removing myrtle, ivy, and lamuim). Ideas?
