Which fruit tree most desperately needs bird netting?
Last year we bought our first home. We discovered fairly quickly that we have SEVERAL fruit trees – this being Australia, they tend to get heavily eaten by cockatoos, rosellas and other parrots (not to mention the currawongs!). We have, at last count, 11 fruiting trees and 4 grapevines. We currently only have one bird net – our local agricultural store is ordering in more for us. The trees I can identify are plum, apple, apricot, fig, purple leaf plum and olive – with a few trees I can’t identify but are producing fruit.
As I currently only have one net…which to net first? The fig, apricot and plums are the farthest along so far. The olive is only just now flowering.
…it’s not about being greedy. If we don’t net the trees, our fine feathered friends won’t leave any for US!
Our apricot tree is definitely the closest to ripe at the moment.
plums are ready now so if you like them then net that one at once.
actually in the city introduced birds are the main problem with pecking the fruit black birds which were introduced in about 1850 but have seen Rosella’s which come in big mobs.and strip the fruit,also.
Just net the tree which is nearest to harvest with the fruit you like the most as you only have one net harvest times are different.and could save some for yourself the birds will still peck in the fruit net is resting on but you will get a feed also.
EDIT then cover the apricots as will ripen quick plums ripen this time also Australia has different climate different states.
