looking for animal that makes a certain noise?
i always hear this strange sound at night in my neighborhood (i live in st. louis, missouri). it always sounds like it comes from up in a tree and it’s like a hissing that starts off kind of soft, then gets louder, and very creepy sounding. i thought it was some kind of owl but none that live here sound like that except the barn owl, which is similar but i don’t think it’s the same. does anyone know what it could be? it’s driving me nuts!
please no stupid answers. it’s not a snake. i know what a snake sounds like. i’m sorry if i’m not describing the sound very well…it’s like a mix between a hiss and whistle.
It could be a juvenile Barred Owl. One sound that the juveniles make is a hissing sound and is less known to the public. It fits for this time of year as well. You can view it here (first hiss at about :20 seconds):
