When you plant something new how often should you water it?

I spend a lot of money buying plants that just die on me. I buy the right zone and soil type and I buy pernnials or hardy plants. I think I over water or underwater them especially when they are starting off.
So how often to water when it is establishing and after it gets established?
Flowers,
Herbs,
Shrubs,
Evergreen trees

thanks, Esther
all of these get planted outside in the ground.

Hi:
I am a landscaper and designer. This is a great question for you to ask. Buying plants is an investment and taking care of them is very important. There are several different things to look at for maintaining your different plant specimens.

If your flowers and herbs are in containers, they will have to be watered more often. Container plants dry out quicker. I recommend to my clients when they first purchase shrubs and trees to water with a hose for the first couple of weeks. Your goal is to get all the roots established. Take your hose and place it around the base of each tree. Turn it on slowly and let it run for about fifteen minutes, and move the hose. Your goal is to get all the way around the base, so the roots get a good soaking. You can start off by doing this three times a week. Back off to two times a week after two weeks. Adust with natural rainfall. Mulch or pine straw is good to have around shrubs and trees, to help maintain the moisture.

If you live in a hot area, you may need to water the flowers and herbs daily or every other day, through the heat period. If you flowers and herbs are in the ground, check the ground wetness by at least two to three inches deep. It may be dry on the surface, but it is where the roots are that is important.

Once everything gets established, get on a good watering schedule of two to three times a week, depending on natural rainfall.

Hope this helps some. If you need further suggestions, feel free to contact me. I will link you to the site map of my website. There are many articles, tips and techniques that may help you out. Good luck to you and have a great day.
