Care for Your Garden during Winter
What you should do with your garden during winter is to remove the fallen leaves and the brought by autumn storm branches. Do not leave them for a long time because they lead to the choking and rotting of the grass. Choose relatively dry days for cleaning because walking on wet grass leads to soil compaction. It is best to use a designated paddle, which does not injure the grass blades.
Deciduous hedges such as hornbeam or beech are formed before the re-leafing in November or February. During these periods you can do the so-called thinning of deciduous shrubs and trees. If they are not pruned enough for a few years, they often lose their attractive appearance and become too large. A radical pruning of the older parts acts rejuvenating and stimulates the growth of new, viable branches.
Freezing is actually due to drying, because the plants lose large amounts of water under the influence of the sun and wind and the frozen soil does not allow them to renew their stocks. Therefore, sensitive species must be protected from drying in the winter. Low plants can be covered with pine or fir branches. For the higher shrubs are suitable nets or sheets of nonwoven fabric. For most perennial plants in late autumn all the aboveground parts are already dead. They spend winter in the land better protected and do not require any particular measures. In a harsh time you can put a thick layer of leaven on them. It plays the role of isolation and does not allow the frost to penetrate too deep into the soil. In the rockeries many plants such as creeping phlox and thyme remain green in winter. They are in danger of wilting under the influence of the sun and wind when the ground is frozen. If you cover them with pine and fir branches you will help them survive during the coldest days without any damage. Most herbaceous plants are cold resistant and require no special protection. For the species that love warmth it is good to be protected by covering them with leaves and twigs.
If you have roses in your garden, be careful with the excision of their tips. A more radical pruning of the roses can cause unnecessary injury which would allow the cold to penetrate in them and harm them. The too early pruning is also bad because the plant is deprived of the opportunity to transfer its reserve stocks from the stem to the roots.
If you have ornamental lake, do not worry. It usually does not need protection in winter, provided that it has depth of at least 80-100cm and there is almost no chance to freeze. You should just remember to empty the water containers and pipes because the frozen water expands with great force and can burst even a metal pipe.
