How come the Native American Indians look different?

How come is it that the Native American Indians from Northern Mexico/Southwest US look different from the Native American Indians from Mesoamerica?

I noticed that the ones from Northern Mexico/Southwest US appear taller lighter while the ones from Mesoamerica look smaller and darker.

I don’t think that would make much sense since Northern Mexico and the Southwest are pretty much desert and has very little food and is very hot, while in Mesoamerica, there are more trees, its greener, and there is more shade. So wouldn’t it be the other way around?

I know, there are some exceptions. The Tarahumaras and some indians from Southern California do have really dark skin,

Native americans of Kensas and Texas are darker than the ones of Virginia ….hence both are native americans of USA!
