How does one go about propagating Abelia (Abelia grandiflora)?

I’ve seen information that says, “Hardwood cuttings in summer, layers in spring.” But I don’t know the exact specifics of what that means. Does it mean cutting some of the shoots from the shrub and placing them in water until they sprout roots, or what?

Hardwood cuttings are taken from a mature section of the plant while it is dormant (late fall, winter or spring). For evergreen which the abelia falls under, the cuttings should be taken in early winter. With hardwood cuttings a rooting hormone is often used before the cutting is placed in soil or potting mix. This hormone encourages root growth. Wear gloves during this process so as to not touch the hormone.

Layering is a method that keeps the target stalk attached to the host plant, until it grows roots. An area on the target stalk is etched/cut/wounded, rooting hormone can be used if desired, then said section is placed in the ground and staked so that the tip and source stem are exposed to air.
