How to Improve the Social Lives of the Elderly In Nursing Homes
The majority of our older generations still have a very active social life. Many are involved in civic clubs and other social organizations and fraternities even into their golden years. One of the reasons some of our elderly do not wish to enter a rest home or nursing home facility is that they believe that they won’t be able to participate in their respective social events. In many facilities, those fears are realized because the the facility does not provide many opportunities for social interaction. There are many reasons for this, but the most common reason is the individual’s deterioration of health.
Nursing homes and rest facilities have the distinct opportunity to provide the continuation of their residents’ social lives by allowing social and civic organizations to meet in a day room or an activity room area. If allowed to do this, the members of such clubs are able to continue their participation in these type of organizations. Many civic and fraternal groups make a point to at least go out and visit their members who now reside in nursing homes. The Freemasons, Elks, Knights of Columbus, Order of the Eastern Star, Shriners and other such fraternal groups many times will send out a visitation committee to spend time with their members. Not only does this increase the residents’ social activity but it also provides a continued sense of belonging that might be diminished by their entry into a nursing home.
A nursing home facility may also organize special events such as dinners and parties to allow the residents to socialize in a setting other than what they typically see each other in. This author knows of at least one extended care facility that provided, through funds donated by the staff, a prom night complete with live music and a catered dinner. The male residents were decked out in coats and ties while the ladies wore evening dresses. Everyone had a spectacular time with dancing and nonalcoholic drinks. The staff informed me that most of the attending residents actually slept in the next morning!
Many other opportunities to improve the social lives of residents are found in activities such as group gardening clubs. Having a patio with a garden area is very beneficial to a nursing home facility. The residents may plant flowers and shrubs and with the assistance of trained activity staff, they are able to cultivate absolutely beautiful flower beds and minor landscaping scenes. With the aid a several bales of hay to raise the height of the garden, residents can plant vegetables and tomatoes, harvesting the fruit of their labor and enjoying fresh foods. Activities such as these are, of course, subject to weather and heat, however, the residents are able to enjoy working with their hands, as many of them have done throughout their lives.
