Plants are dying in AZ heat?
I have quite a few shrubs in my yard that are dying in this AZ hot summer. I am in the phoenix area and have been watering my morning glory and lantana every other day for about an hour. They are all looking a weepy and like they are in the first stages of dying. I also have a small ficus tree I planted in my yard. It gets some afternoon sun and is starting to lose its leaves. The guy at the nursery said its leaves would burn its first few summers, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to make it if I don’t do something soon. All the plants are on the same timer…not something I can change. Should I water more often? Less oftern? Longer? I really don’t know how to save my plants. All of our trees are doing great.
I hope that hour irrigation is with a drip system! Otherwise you are drowning your plants. Phoenix as is much of the desert area filled with caliche, that compact subsoil layer that does not allow water to flow past……think rudimentary concrete. If you over water, the water stays on top of the caliche eventually filling the planting area with water and rotting out the roots.
It’s absolutely the wrong time for morningglory……..It’s 115 for heavens sake. The desert actually goes dormant in the summer due to the heat, roses drop their leaves, other plants also drop in order to survive the heat.
You need to hook up with the Maricopa Master Gardeners who will guide you thru what to plant, when to plant and how to irrigate, fertilize, etc in the blast furnace called Phoenix. You can find them in the blue pages, government, under Maricopa County Extension Service.
