What kind of plants would be good as a barrier to my yard?
I live on the eastern shore of Maryland, and my house is by a rail road track. I’ve been having issues with people hanging around my yard. Calling the cops doesn’t solve the problems forever, because a new group just comes along later. What I’d like to do is plant bushes or shrubs all around the edge of my property as a barrier. I was thinking of something with thorns, something that will be an excellent deterrent. I am not opposed to poison ivy. I really, really want to keep people away. I’m so sick of picking up beer cans, litter, and other unmentionables. I’m not saying I wish anyone harm, but if I can speed up karma and make them face the consequences of their ignorance and false sense of entitlement..I’ll take it.
A VERY thorny hedge that I used to keep junior highschoolers out of my backyard was pyracantha -also called firethorn. It has berries in the winter that the birds love, but its really redeeming grace are the one inch thorns and the fact that as a hedge it is impenetrable. I got the following data from Floridata.com: Because of its fast growth rate, sprawling, spreading habit, and ease of care, it can be used on slopes to great advantage requiring little maintenance or care. The wide-reaching stems may be pruned back as needed during warm weather as the shrub blooms on old wood. Even consider using it as an informal hedge! This will require some trimming and shaping for the first few years but the effort will produce impressively beautiful and secure (thorny) hedges.
Landscapers love the firethorns for their fast rate of growth and ability to withstand drought and neglect.
