Can I trim my Pieris Japonica and when?

I bought and planted 2 small Pieris Japonica last year and one of them isn’t as upright as I’d like. Can someone please advise me about shaping this shrub? It seems healthy, weathered our very snowy winter and already has lovely blossoms and new growth on it this spring so I don’t want to hurt it.

Best time to prune Pieris is shortly after flowering.

If the shrub seems “tilted” to you, you may prune out one or more of the offending branches by pruning them out down close to the base of the shrub. You may also remove parts of a branch.

You may also remove any damaged or broken branches.

Since the shrub is young, I would go easy with the pruning. Do a little this spring, then more the following. Remove no more than 1/4 of the total shrub – I would do less.
