Will a lilac tree damage the foundation of my house?
I am considering ripping out a shrub we have about 6 feet from the corner of our house (and about 4 feet from the sump pump line) and replacing it with a lilac bush/tree. Is it likely to cause damage to either of these structures? Do the roots spread wide? Thanks!
Lilac tree roots are not invasive as say, willows, so you are probably fine. Remember though, a root doesn’t have to be invasive, just the natural thickening of the lateral roots each year can crush some pipe. If your sump pump pipe is old, clay it’s be very careful with it. Newer products are better “root proof”…..not perfect but better than clay.
