What do you think of these boy names {F-J}?
A list of names I liked from my baby name book is below. Thorough comments are greatly appreciated, but simply rating/leaving short comments is also welcome.
Name / Origin / Meaning
Finn / Gaelic / A fair-haired man
Garrett / English / One who is mighty with a spear
Gavin / Welsh / A little white falcon
Grant / English / A tall man
Heath / English / From the untended land of flowering shrubs
Holden / English / From the hollow in the valley
Ian / Gaelic / God is gracious
Isaac / Hebrew / Full of laughter
Ivan / Slavic / God is gracious
Jack / English / God is gracious
John / Hebrew / God is gracious
Justin / Latin / One who is just and upright
Joshua / Hebrew / God is salvation
Now, what is your overall favorite?!?
Thanks!
Finn – I like this one, it has grown on me a lot recently. I do think I prefer it as a nickname for Finley / Finlay but I still really like it. It’s very masculine and strong sounding, it brings to mind images of a surfer or someone who loves the beach. But at the same time it has a calm and relaxed sound to it. As a full name I give it 7/10 and as a nickname I give it 9/10.
Garrett – I don’t like this one, it’s very last name-ish, it reminds me of Peter Garrett from Midnight Oil, not that that’s a bad thing it just makes me think of a bald Australian bloke. It does sound more like a surname than a first name as well. 3/10.
Gavin – A lot of people on here seem to like this name a lot, I, on the other hand, really don’t like it. I think it has something to do with my accent which makes it sound really odd when I say it but it just sounds ugly to me, I do see the appeal in the name though and I think it looks nice written down, I just don’t like the sound of it. 2/10.
Grant – Reminds me of the famous Australian swimmer, Grant Hackett. I don’t like it, it makes me think of money (much in the same way that the name Cash does) or one of those home loan grants from the government or something like that! Or a wish LOL. I don’t like this one (it does sound very stuck up as well). 2/10.
Heath – I quite like this one, I like it a lot more than Keith which is more common. It reminds me of Heath Ledger but that’s not a bad thing
I really like it. I don’t think I’d ever use it and it’s not on my list but I think I would recommend it, it’s nice, very charming and handsome sounding, 8/10.
Holden – Straight off makes me think of the car. I don’t like it at all for that reason and also that it just doesn’t have a nice sound to it, it seems very trashy if someone were to actually use the name since Holden is a very well known car manufacturer. 1/10.
Ian – I think this name is outdated and plain and boring sounding. It’s nice enough but it does remind me of old people, I know a lot of people who are 60+ named Ian so it just seems to have that feel to it. I do, however, love the similar name ‘Cian’ pronounced KEE-an which is Gaelic. I think it’s a lot more modern without being trendy
Ian gets a 4/10.
Isaac – I like this name, it’s cute and underused. I have a thing for Biblical boys names, a lot of them are really lovely and have nice meanings. The meaning of Isaac is a is another plus. I just all round like this name, I haven’t got anything bad to say about it. And Zac is a cute nickname, much nicer short for Isaac than for Zachary. 8/10.
Ivan – no no no no no. To me, this would be like naming your child Adolf. I don’t know if you would have heard of the serial murderer (Australian, murdered heaps of backpackers in the 90′s), Ivan Milat. Well this name just brings to mind pictures of him, the name (to me at least) is completely off limits. 0/10.
Jack – I love this name, it’s gorgeous, masculine and not overly common though everyone seems to like it. It has a sense or romance to it (thanks Titanic!) and it just has a soft feel to it. I adore this name, and if it hadn’t already been dibbsed by a family member, I would consider using it. 10/10.
John – It’s a pretty standard name, but it’s SO boring. It’s like the name Mary, always used as an example. (ie. John had 5 apples and he ate 3, how many apples did John have left?) you know what I mean? There is nothing wrong with the name it’s just so overused and outdated and boring. 3/10.
Justin – I like this name, I like this and Jason (similar), Justin has a modern edge to it but maintains it’s traditional value. It’s one of those names that have been used for a long time now and hasn’t become outdated but it’s not trendy. I like it a lot
9/10.
Joshua – I love this name, absolutely, dead set adore it! I don’t have anything else to say about it, I just plain love it and Josh is such a cute nickname
10/10!
My favourite is Joshua ♥
