Can you identify this flower: red spiral with long pistil?
I don’t have a picture, unfortunately (I just spent a fruitless hour on Google Image Search!), but I can describe it:
It’s a low, flowering shrub-like plant with conifer-like leaves (but soft, not needles) along a woody stem. The flowers, which grow in small clusters along the stem, are small (>1 cm) spiral-shaped buds that begin a dark red and become variegated red and yellow as they get bigger. Ultimately, the buds shoot out a long, red pistil that coils up out of the flower.
I found it growing as groundcover at my school on the central coast of California (which has a mild, mediterranean climate).
I’m tearing my hair out! I don’t know what it is!

From your description, I’d guess maybe what you have was a Grevillea:

I can’t give you a definite species (there are more than 250 species, plus cultivars), but I think your plant is something in this genus.
