The first poster is correct. “Fruit” is anything that is, or has within, seeds.

Any tree or shrub that does not produce seeds is a sterile hybrid, and will not be able to propagate itself without human intervention.

There are seedless cultivars in the plant world, but they are often the accidental sterile offspring of two different parent plants – similar to a mule, which is the offspring of a horse and a donkey. Mules are sterile, and cannot make more of their own – to get more mules, you have to keep cross-breeding horses and donkeys.

In the plant world, when a sterile offspring is produced (such as the Crimson King Red Maple), the cultivar is propogated and multiplied through grafting. In essence, all the Crimson King Red Maples you see (the big maple trees with the dark purple leaves in the summer) are clones of the same tree.
