What could I plant in my backyard? Semi-fast growing, flowering shrub, bush or small tree?
Doesn’t HAVE to flower but would be great. I live in missouri and the backyard is fairly big for a city lot. I love Hibiscus trees but my experience is kind of mediocre so I need a hardy plant. My tastes also include burning bushes, maple trees, lilac, etc
I’d recommend a red (osier?) dogwood if you want a shrub. They aren’t the most dramatic, but their bark is quiet red and is gorgeous during the winter, especially if it’s near an evergreen. I’d also recommend a Tulip Poplar if you have the space. The leaves are amazing in the fall.
Dogwood trees are stunning too, and come in a variety of colours (red/pink/white). Alternatively, you could try a rose tree, but they can be a bit fussy. Missouri is a Zone 6 for gardening, so you can grow a wide range of plants. If in doubt, go for something that is rated for Zones 1-6. (1 being the arctic, 6 your climate) Zone 7/8 plants will probably survive, but won’t necessarily be as large or vibrant as they could be and will require more work.
