Tree question for Northeast (United States)?

Hello Everyone!

I’m in Zone 6 here in the Northeast. I’m already planning my strategy for next spring. One of the beds that I want to do will be just off the driveway close to an electrical box. I want to do a perennial flower bed and I want to put a tree right in the middle. I was watching one of those landscape shows on DIY. I think it was called “Desperate Landscapes.” On one of the shows the host talked about a tree that grows tall but doesn’t go out to the sides much. It has small leaves. It’s not a honey locust. It’s a low maintenance kind of tree. I don’t think it’s a common tree. It’s not a pear tree either. Can anyone help me out? Any help would be great? Thanks. p.s. – enjoy the down time the winter brings…. think spring!

Many common trees are now available in mini or fastigate (tall and thin) shapes. You can buy many varieties including oak (quercus). Check with your local nursery for any varieties that suit your area. Also check the plant finder sections of Better HOmes and Gardens or BBC Gardening sites. They have pictures and you may spot the same tree you saw on the show. Also, does the DIY show have a website sometimes they provide a list of plants they used in particular episodes, it may be as easy as that. It shouldn’t be a problem to find one. Something like Pyrus ‘Capital’ may suit your needs.
