Best ancestor finder?
I am writing a report on my family tree. What is the best website where you can find ancestors?
Websites with family trees only aren’t worth a plug nickel. What you need is one that has records/documents.
Family Trees on websites, whether it is free or one you have to pay to subscribe, are not submitted by some expert but by folks like you and me and there are errors. They are seldom documented and if they are they are poorly documented. You frequently will see different info on the same people from different subscribers. Then you will see repeatedly the absolute same info on the same people from different subscribers but you would be very foolish if you thought for one moment that means it is correct. A lot of people copy without verifying. Believe me when you find you are dead, like I did, and all your family married and died in places where they never lived, you will understand that. If you disagree with something someone has on a family member, the owners of the websites will tell you that is between you and the other subscriber.
Ancestry.Com, I believe, is the best for the total amount of original source records online. You have to differentiate between the records and their family trees. One place they use the titled “FamilyTree Records.” Those aren’t records.
They have all the U.S. censuses through 1930. The 1940 and later are not available to the public yet. They have military, land, immigration and other records. They have indexes to vital records(birth, marriage and death) of many U.S. states. Now, not all records are online but the ones they have will say you time and money traveling all over the country to libraries and courthouses.
If you find it too pricey, your pubic library might have a subscription to it you can use for free.
A good free source is a Family History Center at a Latter Day Saints(Mormon) Church. They have records on people all over the world, not just Mormons. In Salt Lake City, they have the world’s largest genealogical collection. Their FHCs can order microfilm for you to view at a nominal fee.
I have never had them to try and convert me or have I heard of them doing that to anyone else that has used their resources. Just call the nearest Mormon Church or visit their free website, FamilySearch.org, to get their hours for the general public.
