I have 5 Autumn Blaze Flowering Pear trees, that have brown leaves at the top& bare branches. What can I do?

The trees are approx 12 yrs old, and are close enough to each other that they touch. This year we have casada killer bees in the ground, not far from the trees. Could they be affecting the trees? There are also a few “dead” patches of leaves in the middle of the trees. There are no brown leaves closer to the trunk. We have had plenty of rainfall. Could squirrels be causing this? What is causing this and what can we do to stop it?

Callery Pears (Flowering Pears) are pretty disease resistant. Autumn Blaze is more prone to Fire Blight which is easily ID’ed because the branch tips look burned is if by fire and the ends of the branches, the very tips, twist over like a shephard’s crook. The disease occurs during wet spring weather. There are things to spray, but generally pruning out the infected branch is the solution. Just remember to clean the saw blade with alcohol or bleach so as not to spread the bacterial infection.

Now my Calleries do develop this dead sections when we have not kept up with proper nutrition, mainly iron in the soil. Since we flood irrigate, a lot of nutrients are lost through leaching and early spring we have to replace it. By this time of year I see signs of nutritional deficiency showing up. But I figure the trees are past their growth spurt and will be fine until February.

Because Autumn Blaze and the others are so dense, they can shade out their centers which would kill of interior leaves. This is normal.

As for bees in the roots……no I can’t see a problem for the tree……you maybe, but not the tree. I can’t think of a boring insect that gets into the trees……..but that’s not to say there isn’t something that will attack a tree in stress.

Have you used chemicals around the tree? On the ground?

Squirrels……….I think you’d see bark damage. Have you examined the interior trunk(s) bark for scratching, discoloration like a wet area? Holes?
