Optical Sights For Backwoods Hunting

There are huge advantages to using non magnifying or very low magnification optical sights in hunting. The sight picture is very fast to pick up and place on the target, even against the clutter of silhoutted branches etc.. You get much better situational awareness with a non magnifying sight which is ultimately like looking down a drinking straw. These sights really come into their own for the kind of close range deer, turkey and small game shooting common in the Eastern and Southern States. These units have a strong military heritage, but manufacturers have gone to the trouble of making civilian hunting versions that lack the night vision compatability of their military units, reducing the price and making it easier to export or travel with them to foreign contries.

Reflex sight design has come a long way over the last few years. Aimpoint, market leader in red dot sights recently introduced their Micro H-1 red dot sight. This sight weighs only 4.9 ounces and makes a highly effective wild turkey sight.
