Artificial Trees Take a Huge Step for Science
Artificial trees are relatively familiar to most people. We see them in homes, hospitals, offices and even gardens where the fact that they require no watering, re-potting, preening or nurturing like real trees do, make them a popular choice.
However, environmentally, artificial trees generally don’t do much more than look attractive and brighten a room. it is possible that this fact is about to change dramatically. A US scientist has put pen to paper to invent artificial trees which are specifically designed to behave like plants. If this invention were to become reality, artificial trees could be taking in carbon in the same way that real trees do and contributing to the war on global warming.
The invention remains only an idea on paper at the moment and it doesn’t actually look anything close to a real tree, like artificial trees do. The scientist behind the idea, Dr Lackner describes the artificial trees as looking more like American football goalposts with Venetian blinds in between.
The new artificial trees could perform the work of their real counterparts by drawing in carbon dioxide from the air just as plants do during the photosynthesis process but with the difference that the artificial trees would store the carbon instead of giving out oxygen.
Dr Lackner estimates that one of his eco friendly artificial trees would be able to remove 90,000 tonnes of carbon from our atmosphere. To put that into perspective that is around the same amount as 15,000 cars will produce. Using those figures as a base, we would need a quarter of a million artificial trees around the world to combat the effects of the 25 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide produces annually.
This is interesting news for the long term future of the artificial trees and plants business. It may be a long way off but let’s hope the idea comes to fruition and we can combine attractive artificial trees with environmentally friendly technology to contribute to protecting the planet’s future.
